Lessons in Empowering and Overcoming: Freudian Slip

Welcome to Lessons in Empowering and Overcoming. My goal is to empower people to reach their God-given potential through improvements in mental, physical, financial, and spiritual health. I share insights from past experiences and challenges I had to overcome to have the resilience to stand before you today.  The goal is to grow, and I believe that all our experiences are simply training grounds used by God to teach us the lessons we need to fulfill our purpose. Each training ground is meant to give you tools and skills to elevate you until you have reached your pinnacle.

I call this “Freudian Slip.” The experience taught me key lessons regarding discernment. As a result, I’ve learned to become a more efficient listener to what is being said, more attentive to my surroundings and how things are being implemented, and more conscientious about how to truly interact with others, especially when I need help. I believe you’ll find it both entertaining and educational, and I pray that it equips you with the tools you need if you ever face such a training ground.

1. Identifying the Issue

I found myself in a moment where my desire for more income opened me up to traps disguised as opportunities. A supervisor introduced me to a “system” that sounded like freedom but quickly revealed itself as manipulation. The real moment of clarity came through a Freudian slip—when truth accidentally slipped out and exposed their intent to take advantage of me. That experience forced me to face how easily we can be placed on someone’s “list” as a target.

2. Three Steps Toward Resolution

  • Clarify the Language: When people use terms you don’t understand—like “alternative streams of money”—stop and make sure you’re speaking the same language.
  • Question Secrecy: If someone only wants to help you in private, it’s often a red flag that their intent is not in your best interest.
  • Listen for the Slip: People reveal themselves, sometimes unintentionally. Pay attention to what is spoken when their guard is down—it may save you from being taken advantage of.

3. Benefits of Resolution

Learning to discern intent has protected me from harm and strengthened my ability to walk in wisdom. It taught me that every opportunity is not meant for me, and that being cautious allows me to protect my family, my integrity, and my future. By trusting discernment and listening closely, I not only avoided exploitation but also grew in confidence that God equips me with the awareness to see through deception.

Supporting Scriptures (NIV)

“The simple believe anything, but the prudent give thought to their steps.” — Proverbs 14:15

If you know anyone who may be struggling due to not making enough money, requires assistance from more powerful people, finds themselves in a situation in which they could be taken advantage of, or benefits from being able to protect themselves from individuals out there who may take advantage of them, then  I encourage you to share this with them. Each one teach one.

God Bless
